What Does a $0, $50, or $100 Deductible Really Mean?

When you're comparing Vehicle Service Contracts (VSCs), the deductible can make a big difference in what you pay when your vehicle needs a covered repair. But what does a $0, $50 or $100 deductible actually mean?

What Is a Deductible?

A deductible is the amount you are responsible for paying toward an eligible covered repair, according to the terms of your VSC.

For example, if your contract has a $100 deductible and your transmission requires a covered repair costing $4,000, you would generally be responsible for the $100 deductible, while the remaining eligible repair costs would be handled according to the contract.

With a $0 deductible, there is no deductible due for an otherwise covered repair.

$0 Deductible

A $0 deductible provides the greatest convenience when a covered repair occurs. If the repair is approved and fully covered under the contract, you don't have a deductible to pay.

However, $0 deductible does not mean everything is free. Non-covered components, excluded repairs, maintenance items and other charges not covered by the contract may still be your responsibility.

$50 Deductible

A $50 deductible means you generally pay the first $50 of an approved covered repair, subject to the contract's specific terms.

For many drivers, this can be a middle-ground option—providing meaningful protection while potentially costing less than a $0 deductible plan.

$100 Deductible

With a $100 deductible, you generally pay the first $100 of an approved covered repair. While that is more out-of-pocket than a $0 or $50 deductible, it can still be relatively small compared with major repairs involving an engine, transmission, electrical system or other expensive components.

Don't Choose Based on Deductible Alone

The deductible is only one part of the VSC.

When comparing plans, look at the coverage level, covered components, exclusions, contract term, mileage limits, claim procedures and additional benefits. A lower deductible isn't necessarily the best value if the underlying coverage doesn't meet your needs.

Most importantly, understand whether the deductible applies per repair visit, per covered component or according to another method specified in your contract.
